'With the latest v1.4 Hummingbird update, macOS image editing tool Pixelmator Pro now offers new app integration, a crop and zoom tool and a laundry list of miscellaneous performance improvements. The most significant update is that Pixelmator Pro now works as an editing extension in Apple’s Photos app. With just two clicks, editors can access all familiar tools such as effects and adjustments without the need to open Pixelmator. The integration also carries over all the Pixelmator Pro keyboard shortcuts and iCloud backup capability.Furthermore, the update brings a new zoom tool for the main app and extension, along with a revamped crop panel for the standalone app only.Compared to the old zoom tool, the new one offers an interactable thumbnail that indicates the approximate position of the viewpoint. It provides at-a-glance navigation guidance that makes moving around a vast canvas less disorienting.Likewise, the new crop panel provides better ways to crop and visualize an image. For starters, users can now cut an image to the exact pixel dimensions instead of ratios.Besides this, the new Delete mode permanently deletes all the cropped region. There are also commands to flip the image vertically and horizontally.Other than that, users can also now drag and drop all layered files (PXM, PXD, PSD, SVG) into an open Pixelmator Pro document. To turn Photos into Pixelmator Pro, users need to click on the three-dot menu located in the top right corner, and choose Pixelmator Pro in the dropdown menu.Keep in mind that the extension doesn’t grant direct access to Pixelmator’s crop toolbar button.User need to press C to circumvent the limitation, says 9to5Mac . 'While FaceApp is able to modify pretty much anything about your face with artificial intelligence (AI), it can’t turn your selfie into a classical portrait.A group of researchers at the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab have created an interesting website that turns your uploaded selfies into portraits of the past. The website utilizes an algorithm trained on 45,000 classical portraits based on faux oil, watercolour and ink. These artworks include the works of Rembrandt, Titan and Van Gogh. The algorithm uses a specific drawing style from the acclaimed artists based on the key features of the modern selfie.Researchers said that their method of AI face generation isn’t just a filter. It uses generative adversarial network (GAN) to create new faces from scratch. With respect to privacy, according to researchers, your selfies are sent to the server in order to produce the classical portrait, and your data won’t be used for any other purpose.Every selfie sent through algorithm will be deleted “immediately,” the researchers said.As of right now, the site is down for maintenance.Via: The Verge . Carriers like TELUS and Bell also started informing their customers that the rollover may negatively impact their devices.Telus listed 21 phones that will not get software mitigation.Dubbed as the Y2K crisis but for the GPS, the issue may cause many location-enabled devices to provide inaccurate location information to emergency services like 911, which may raise severe safety concerns. If you are on an old phone abandoned by its manufacturer, it’s a good idea to upgrade now for the sake of personal safety.Via: iPhone in Canada . 'Starting with version 4.20, Google Photos for Android has added a handy live preview function for videos. The new feature will silently preview the file for a few seconds and then stop.Furthermore, the preview will also end if the system detects a scroll. However, its current implementation doesn’t feel seamless, especially when facing multiple videos stacked together. In most scenarios, Google Photos would only randomly preview one of them without apparent reasons. In a few cases, it only previews the longest video first then slowly move on to the rest with a noticeable intervening delay.Android Police pointed out that it doesn’t work in albums or search as well.On top of that, the feature lacks support for motion photos, animations, and burst photos. Some see Google slapping live preview to Photos as a counter to Apple’s revamped photo app on the iOS 13.Compared to Google’s static UI, the upcoming iOS photo app features a more dynamic interface that blends well with live preview and machine learning that removes clutter.Via: 9t05Google . 'A new report from The Wall Street Journal states that Apple ranks its own apps above competitors in App Store search results.Apple says that it tested these same searches and received different results.More specifically, The Wall Street Journal claims that Apple’s apps ranked first in “more than 60 percent” of queries for terms like “maps.” The report then goes on to say that apps such as Music and Books rank in the first 95 percent of searches in the App Store.Regarding Apple’s tests, the company says that its own searches brought up different results. That said, the tech giant did not release further details regarding its search results. In a statement to The Wall Street Journa l regarding the report, Apple said the following: “Apple customers have a very strong connection to our products and many of them use search as a way to find and open their apps. This customer usage is the reason Apple has strong rankings in search, and it’s the same reason Uber, Microsoft and so many others often have high rankings as well.” Apple says that it utilizes machine learning technology to rank its results in the app store, including the company’s own apps. The company specifically uses 42 factors to determine where apps rank in search, but keeps the specifics of this algorithm secret to prevent search result manipulation, according to The Wall Street Journal . However, Apple did reveal that downloads, ratings, relevance and user behaviour are the four most important factors when it comes to search results in the App Store.Apple is currently facing an antitrust investigation in Europe related to Apple Music and Apple News . 'Following several leaks revealing that Samsung is working on a Galaxy Watch Active 2, a new report claims the watch will sport a touch-based bezel navigation system, Bluetooth 5 and more.Samsung’s smartwatches used to offer a rotating bezel which people could use for navigation. However, the South Korean company ditched the feature earlier this year with the release of the Galaxy Watch Active.According to SamMobile , however, Samsung may bring the feature back in a new way.The Watch Active 2 will reportedly feature a touch sensor on the bezel which simulates the action of rotating the bezel.Watch owners will be able to slide their finger around the edge of the watch to navigate the operating system.Hopefully, this works as well in practice as it sounds in theory.Samsung’s Tizen software works best with a rotating bezel, and if the touch sensor works well, it can be as effective without taking up the extra space.Along with the details about the bezel, SamMobile also reports that the Active 2 will sport a 1.4-inch screen on the 44mm variant and a 1.2-inch screen on the 40mm watch. Both displays will be 360×360 pixel AMOLED panels with Gorilla Glass DX+. Additionally, the LTE and Bluetooth models will have 1.5GB and 768MB of RAM, respectively.SamMobile says the Watch Active 2 will use Bluetooth 5.0 as well, which should improve the range and battery life.Eventually, the Watch Active 2 will get ECG support, but that likely won’t come until 2020.Source: SamMobile Via: 9to5Google . 'Facebook’s Messenger Kids app is intended to offer children a safe, parent-controlled way to communicate with friends and family. However, a recent flaw in the app has had the completely opposite effect and is inadvertently putting kids into chats with complete strangers.According to  The Verge , Facebook has been quietly closing down affected group chats and notifying participants of the issue. However, the company hadn’t publicly disclosed the issue. In a statement, a Facebook spokesperson confirmed the bug has been “affecting a small number of group chats” and that it’s been privately notifying users. That said, the spokesperson didn’t provide a specific number of those who have been affected.Facebook also hasn’t yet revealed how long the flaw has been active in the app, which launched in December 2017 in the U.S. and later came to Canada in June 2018 . Therefore, it’s unclear if this is a recent issue or something that has been going on for a longer period. As noted by  The Verge , the bug stems from the way Messenger Kids’ unique permissions are applied to group chats.Standard two-person chats must be approved the child’s parents. However, these specific permissions weren’t extended to group chat, meaning that a participant can invite someone they’ve been authorized to chat with, regardless if they’ve been approved by the other chat members.Messenger Kids has previously been criticized by privacy groups who assert that the app is in violation of the U.S.’ Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which safeguards kids under the age of 13.Meanwhile, Facebook as a whole is facing ongoing scrutiny for breach of privacy in the fallout of the Cambridge Analytica scandal and  a probe by the Federal Trade Commission . 'Progressive Conservative Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced the provinces first-ever $315 million plan to improve and expand broadband and cell phone services in rural and remote communities.Initially announced in the 2019 Ontario Budget, the funding would be spread over five years. The ‘Up to Speed’ plan includes a $150 million commitment for a new broadband fund that will leverage private sector funding and support from other levels of the government, a press release said. The plan intends to generate up to $1 billion in total investment over five years that will result in new connections for up to 220,000 homes and businesses. “This will lead to community, social and economic benefits well beyond the provincial investment,” the release said. The plan itself has four pillars of action, the first to deliver regional and shovel-ready projects that will expand broadband and cellular access in southwestern, eastern and northern Ontario. The second invests $150 million towards provincial broadband and cellular infrastructure that will begin in 2020.The third maximizes existing programs and assets to invest in this infrastructure. Finally, it will modernize the government by cutting red tape to make it easier for the government and private sector to deliver these broadband projects. “Our government committed to help businesses, families, and farms stay connected – no matter where they live,” Ford said in the release. “Too many families and businesses in rural and remote communities are being left behind.Open for Business has to mean Open for Everybody. Our investment will get shovels in the ground, get infrastructure built, and get people and business connected. With our plan, businesses, families and workers can count on an Ontario that will move faster than ever before.” More recently on the federal level, Rural Economic Development Minister Bernadette Jordan announced the Connectivity Strategy for Canada that expands on how the government intends to meet its target to connect 100 percent of Canadian households to high-speed internet. The strategy builds on the existing investments, which includes Budget 2019’s $1.7 billion CAD over 13 years to establish the Universal Broadband Fund, low earth orbit satellites, topping the Connect to Innovate program , and meeting connectivity needs for the future. $500 million from the Connect to Innovate program that was announced in 2016; $750 million from the CRTC’s broadband fund ; $1 billion from the Canada Infrastructure Bank, which will also leverage at least $2 billion in additional private sector funding; and the Accelerated Investment Incentive.Source: Ontario Government .
